The 10th Nass Christian should be compensated with speaker and Senate president

A new twist has been added to

the race for the leadership of the 10th National Assembly as the Northwest is winning the race to produce the next Senate President.

The ruling All Progressives Congress was believed to strongly considering ceding the Senate Presidency to the Southeast or South-South so that a Christain Senate President will emerge to bring the balancing needed for stability because of the controversy the Muslim-Muslim ticket the party presented in the last election which produced Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima.

The Progressives Governor Forum, an umbrella body of the Governors elected on the platform of APC, has maintained the same position which it presented to the leadership of the party.

Iwitnesslive had reported that the inner caucus of the President-elect had considered a former Governor of Akwa Ibom State Godswill Akpabio for the position as Tinubu supports the ceding of the post to assuage the Christian community. However, our correspondent has learnt that the Northwest has scaled up the pressure around the President-elect to have him back down on supporting the Senate Presidency coming to the South.

They are insisting that they produced the highest number of votes that made APC win the election and should be adequately compensated for their hard work.

“The push for Senator Jibrin Barau has become intense in the last few days and we are likely going to see a situation where the Senator from Kano emerge as the next Senate President if the feelers from the Tinubu’s camp are anything to go by,” a source within the party told our correspondent.

“Tinubu has repeatedly said he would relegate religion and promote competence in his government and these people are holding him to his words. They argued that Christians held the position of the Senate President, Deputy Senate President and House of Reps Speaker at the same time before without hue and cry and religious sentiments should be allowed to take precedence in this matter.

“So, we are likely going to see a situation where the Chairman of the party Abdullahi Adamu making way for another person who is going to be a Christian while the Speaker of the House of Representatives is also going to be from the Christain South.”

Our source confirmed that Tinubu would meet with the leadership of the party this week to take a final decision on the matter.

Apart from Barau and Akpabion, other aspirants jostling for the Senate President seat include Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North); Abdul-Aziz Yari (Zamfara West); Sani Musa (Niger East); Ali Ndume (Borno South), Osita Izunaso (Imo West), Dave Umahi (Ebonyi South) and Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North
